Improving the sound environment in our preschools

How to improve the acoustic environment at our nurseries and preschools

‍‍
Here are some suggestions for action in brief.

1. Felt pads on all furniture
Felt pads reduce loud and unpleasant noise that occur when furniture is moved around the floor. A simple and effective solution to reduce disturbing noise.

2. Wall-hung acoustic panels
Wall hung acoustic panels are a convenient and effective way to reduce the noise level while being easy to install. Depending on the shape and material, they can also be a fun and stimulating interior detail.

3. Use sound-absorbing table and floor screens
In nurseries and preschools, it is common to have large open spaces that have everything from relaxing corners, play areas to individual activities. Here, it is important to get control of the high noise levels for the sake of both the children and the staff. An effective way is to create activity zones with the help of flexible sound-absorbing table and floor screens.

4. Decorate with textiles and upholstered furniture
Textiles and soft furnishing are among the most sound-absorbing materials. An effortless way to reduce noise levels in a preschool environment is to decorate with upholstered furniture and textiles such as curtains, cushions, and other soft materials.

5. Use cushioning materials on tables and floors
Cushioning materials on tables and other surfaces such as rubber mats reduce the sound of playing and hitting cutlery and glasses.

6. Choose the right materials for play and storage
Nurseries and preschools are a place for play and fun. Playing on the floor with building blocks and other hard toys contributes to an increased noise level. Try to choose toys in non-hard materials and use upholstered storage boxes to reduce the noise level.

7. Avoid metal
Use recycled plastic products instead of metal for play, storage and in the kitchen. It is more environmentally friendly and less noisy for both children and staff.
